ACHIEVEMENT: Prizes have been awarded for the best street front garden, the best large scale hanging garden or greenery and the best small scale display of hanging pots or window boxes.
| TARGET DATE: December 2003 |
PROGRESS: Some |
DESCRIPTION: This is a scheme to encourage and award people who liven up the city by maintaining street gardens, hanging gardens and hanging pots or window boxes.
I anticipate a lively competition being run by an independent organisation would establishes at least three categories, advertises the competition and then present awards that could include a small plaque that the garden owner could place near their street garden.
After being approached by a company called Boughouse, I have been working with them through the City Council to see if the city can introduce a pilot hanging garden in the City that is large enough to create a good aesthetic and act to create a good microclimate in that area.
I will contact the Open Garden organisers in January 2003 to engage them in the idea. I will put forward the Best Street Garden as a Notice of Motion in February 2003.
FURTHER INFORMATION: The Best Street Garden idea was initiated by Harry Barber, Greens Lord Mayoral Candidate in 2001.

1 September 2008: A cynic is not merely one who reads bitter lessons from the past, he is one who is prematurely disappointed in the future: Sidney J. Harris.
