ACHIEVEMENT: The recommendations of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) have been implemented.
| TARGET DATE: July 2004 |
PROGRESS: Significant. |
DESCRIPTION: Dark alleyways, unlit footpaths and deserted car parks are unpleasant and sometimes dangerous places. However safety can be improved by thoughtful design and understanding how the city is used by its inhabitants. This goal is to implement the recommendations of CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design). This involves dealing with issues of visibility, lighting and accessibility as well as how the presence of others enhances safety.
Work was commenced at the City of Melbourne when I was Chair of the Environment, Community and Cultural Development Committee. It is now a factor taken into account in dealing with development proposals put forward to the City, with planning officers being aware that negotiating these design issues with proponents can often result in no or lost cost benefits and an increase in amenity from the development.
FURTHER INFORMATION: Further information on CPTED is available online by clicking on the underlined acronym. Information on CPTED focussed on local government initiated is hosted by the Australian Institute of Criminology is available by clicking on the underlined title.
With the assistance of staff from the Community Services branch at Melbourne City Council, including Nancy Di Santo and Colleen Lazenby, I have become aware of the following website on CPTED that may also be useful to you:
