100 GREEN ACHIEVEMENTS
ACHIEVEMENT: Melbourne City Council ratepayers are given a voluntary option on use their rates notices to donate money to local organisations of their choice.
| TARGET DATE: August 2004 |
PROGRESS: Some. |
DESCRIPTION: Rates Plus would provide a tick box option on rate notices for ratepayers to donate money to organisations of their choice. As a purely voluntary measure, ratepayers can elected to donate to local organisations to whatever extent they wish.
Money could be forwarded by Melbourne City Council, and be paid directly to charities. If a trust fund is required to administer the money received and/or to determine which organisations eligible for inclusion in Rates Plus, Council may seek the assistance of organisations such as the Melbourne Community Foundation or Our Community
I have discussed this idea with a number of organisations and am developing a summary to put forward as a proposal to Council.
FURTHER INFORMATION: This idea was first suggested to me by Dennis Moriarty of the Melbourne based 'Our Community' organisation, as a means of allowing ratepayers with discretionary income to volunteer financial assistance towards local groups they consider deserving.
