ACHIEVEMENT: To have the Sustainable Living Fair brought to the City of Melbourne so that more people understand what they can do to improve our environment.
| TARGET DATE: September 2001. |
PROGRESS: Achieved. |
DESCRIPTION: The Sustainable Living Fair is a public event promoting and displaying organisations, businesses and ideas promoting environmental sustainability
I went to the Sustainable Living Fair when it was held at Hanging Rock, Kyneton in 1999. It occurred to me that the ideas promoted in the Fair would be a great benefit to the people of the City of Melbourne. I suggested to the organisers that they consider moving the Sustainable Living Fair to somewhere within the City of Melbourne. The people within the organisation and its volunteers did a great deal of work to make this possible and made applications to the City of Melbourne for financial assistance to hold the fair in Melbourne.
The first Sustainable Living Fair in Melbourne in 2001 was to be held in Birrarung Marr, but due to late completion of the park area, was held in Alexandra Gardens. The Fair was a great success, despite some challenging Melbourne weather coming to the Fair on the final day.
The 2003 Sustainable Living Fair was held on 21, 22 and 23 February 2003. It was be the first major event using Federation Square. The organisation for the fair has been very professional, resulting in a strong and well attended fair. The Fair itself was one event among a number during Sustainability Month February 2003.
The 2004 Sustainable Living Festival was staged at Federation Square from February 21 - 23 2004, and was be the culmination of Sustainability month.
The 2005 Sustainable Living Festival was held at Federation Square from February 18 - 20 2005.
FURTHER INFORMATION: Further information on the Sustainable Living Festival is available from their website at www.sustainablelivingfestival.org
I have been a member of the Sustainable Energy Foundation, now Sustainable Living Foundation since 2000. The City of Melbourne has provided financial assistance for the holding of the Sustainable Living Fairs in Melbourne. In the interests of propriety, while I have provided advice to the Foundation, I have absented myself from the votes that made decisions to provide funding for the Fairs on each occasion.
