ACHIEVEMENT: The City of Melbourne invests in 24 hour timers that turn off unneeded appliances during the night and reduces its energy wastage.
| TARGET DATE: July 2004 |
PROGRESS: Some. |
DESCRIPTION: There are a large number of electrical appliances that are useful during the day, but waste energy unnoticed at night. Instant hot water boilers, exhaust fans, lights and coffee makers. By buying a simple 24 hour power adapter that turns the appliances off during hours of the night they are very unlikely to be used, and turning them on again early in the morning, users are very unlikely to known the difference, but over time a lot less energy is used. And a lot less of the midnight coal is burnt in power stations while we sleep.
Very limited progress has been made with the increased shutting down of unsued computer systems during the evenig, but far more is possible.
