ACHIEVEMENT: At least three sites in three streets have car crossings established.
| TARGET DATE: June 2004 |
PROGRESS: Some. |
DESCRIPTION: The City will establish at least three sites in three streets where car crossings are established, rather than pedestrian crossings. The assumption that pedestrians have to fit round vehicle traffic flow could then be changed to allow for cars to fir in with pedestrians.
The speed of pedestrian crossings at major junctions will be altered to allow pedestrians to cross the road in one change of lights; ie. Victoria Parade and Alexandra Parade.
Pelican crossings not at road junctions will turn red within twenty seconds to cut pedestrian waiting times. This will ensure that frustrated pedestrians do not endanger themselves by ignoring the lights and that cars will not stop for red lights unnecessarily.
Car crossings are a feature in the Swedish town of Våxjo, which has the municipal goal of a fossil-free future.
