PAYING RESPECT TO INDIGENOUS OWNERSHIP

ACHIEVEMENT: Individuals or land owners make a personal commitment to spend the equivalent of 1% of their Council rates by contributing directly to an indigenous cause or indirectly by supporting indigenous communities and arts by buying indigenous art and products.

TARGET DATE: September 2004 PROGRESS: None to date.

DESCRIPTION: For some time there has been a movement called 'Pay the Rent'. This idea is prompted by that movement, but reminds people that they have the choice to make the commitment themselves, without having to wait for their governments to do so on their behalf. My suggestion is that the amount is based on being at least 1% of your annual rates bill. The way you spend it is again a matter for you, either directly by providing funds to an organisation or indirectly by thinking about how you spend your money, and making the choice to buy authentic indigenous art or other products when you can.

Cool Green Tip Of The Week - 21 July 2008: Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something: Henry David Thoreau.
