GREENS CR. DAVID RISSTROM'S ELECTION PLATFORM 2001-2004

I believe it is important for elected officials to be kept honest to their election promises. This page, and editions to follow are an evaluation of whether I have been true to this principle. The published candidate statement provided to all voters by the Victorian Electoral Commission is shown below. Election promises I made during the 2001 election campaign are listed below the candidate statement in bold, with detailed information on what I have done to achieve my election promises available by clicking on the underlined title below each promise. This page was last updated on 24 May 2004.

An evaluation of my 1999 election promises and how I have delivered is available by clicking on: Greens Cr. David Risstrom's Successful Election Platform 1999-2001.

THE 'GREENS FOR A LIVING CITY' 2001 ELECTION PLATFORM AND WHAT WE HAVE DONE TO DATE

Greens For a Living City - Candidate Statement

Candidates for the 2001 Melbourne City Council Elections were invited by the Victorian Electoral Commission to provide a 250 word statement of what they intended to do. The Greens For A Living City team, David Risstrom, Sue Pennicuik, Brian Walters, Gemma Pinnell and Gurm Sekhon provided the following statement:

Today you have a chance to make our City a better place. People who live in great cities say to their friends ‘This is a great place to live.’ Business owners in thriving cities say ‘This is a good place to do business.’

We want you to be able to say these things.

Cr. David Risstrom, the ‘quiet achiever’ on council has stayed out of the infighting and got on with the job. The results include:
• Establishment of a Social Housing Trust for improved public housing
• A $5 million ‘Sustainable Melbourne’ environment fund
• Consultation and communication through the People’s Forums
• Better accountability through recording of votes in council meetings
• Increased attention to drug problems as a health issue

Our Council candidates want to:
• see the City become less polluted and more ‘people friendly’
• protect and expand the parks and improve public transport and bike paths
• bring better lighting and make spaces feel safer
• a long term vision for the City, not just for sectional interests and the next election
• support precinct groups, the arts and better city marketing

They are proud to be working in a team for the long term future of our city. We ask you to vote again for our vision of economic prosperity, social equity and environmental quality – not any one before the other. Your vote will help our Councillors bring people friendly solutions. For a better city tomorrow, vote Greens for a Living City. www.melbourne.greens.org.au.
